Abstract:

It has been 70 years since the publication of the first issue of Fertility and Sterility. In his introductory editorial, entitled, “A New Journal,” Editor-in-Chief Pendleton Tompkins advocated for the need for a new journal dedicated to the study of fertility. Even as the number of scientific journals was increasing dramatically in 1950, he argued, it was necessary to have one periodical that would encompass information relevant to the field of fertility, “involving as it does the fundamental sciences of anatomy, biology, embryology, genetics, and physiology; the clinical arts of obstetrics, gynecology and urology; and the practice of veterinary medicine.” (1)
